I’m from the US, and I have a student ID. I’ll be in London for the first two weeks of April. I mostly like musicals, so show recommendations are welcome too! (already have tix to Billy Elliot and Mary Poppins)

One way of getting inexpensive tickets to West End is to go to Leicester Square. There are a number of booths offering half price tickets to several productions. Take note, however, that half price deals are usually only available for the less popular shows, and that for popular productions (like the Phantom of the Opera) or shows that have recently opened, you may not be able to get half price tickets. Half price ticket booths normally take a small commission for each ticket purchased.
Another possibility is to go to the Theatre itself about an hour before the show and hope for return tickets which become available when people cancel their bookings. These tickets are usually offered at a discount.

Will be visiting London in may and my wife and I wanted to see “Mama Mia” but we’re a bit stunned by the cost of tickets. Is there a discount or “last minute sale” site that has theatre tickets cheaper?

Go to the National Theatre for cancellations shortly before a show. It is risky and you’ll have to que but you end up with fab seats.
Lastminute.com also sell on unsold seats cheaply- from the comfort of your PC.

Stand in line and get half price tickets the day of the show at (I think) Half-Tix on Leicester Square. YOu might not get to see exactly what you wanted, but you may discover a great show you might not have bothered seeing, and the prices can’t be beat. We’ve seen many many great shows that way. The trick is to have a listing of ALL the current shows and what they’re about, and to get to the booth early. When they post what tickets are available on the board, quickly scan your show info and decide which sound appealing to you. They don’t like stragglers or to answer a lot of questions when you get to the booth.
